Resources for independent brands
How to find copied product images online
A repeatable search workflow for independent brands: choose reference images, vary your searches and record possible matches.
1. Choose a clear reference
Start with a product photograph that shows the distinctive artwork or design clearly. Keep the original image and product URL together. Try a second view if the first image includes props or a busy background: a different crop can surface different results.
2. Search images and words
Use an image search service that accepts uploaded images, then repeat with another product view. Separately search your product name, brand name and a short description of the distinctive design. Sellers may change titles, so exact-name searches are only one part of the process.
3. Inspect the actual listing
Open promising results and compare the actual listing rather than relying on a thumbnail. Record the seller, URL, date and which details appear similar. Check whether the seller is an authorised partner or whether the result is simply a different product with a common motif.
4. Preserve context
Save a screenshot showing the listing and its URL, alongside your original product page and source image. Record observations separately from conclusions. Use our downloadable evidence checklist to keep each investigation consistent.
5. Repeat on a schedule
A one-off search only shows what you found that day. Repeat searches for important products regularly and log what changed. For Shopify catalogues, Copywatch can run weekly searches and bring possible matches into a review queue.
